How to Hire a BCBA Faster: 6 Steps for ABA Clinics
A practical checklist for ABA clinics that need to fill a BCBA role without losing months or settling for the wrong fit.
Board Certified Behavior Analysts are in high demand, and a single open BCBA seat can slow down intakes, supervision and authorizations across a whole clinic. Here is a practical way to shorten your search without lowering the bar.
1. Define the role before you post it
Write down what the BCBA will actually do: caseload size, supervision load for RBTs, in-clinic, in-home or school settings, travel, and how much time goes to parent training. Candidates decide quickly, and a vague posting attracts the wrong applicants or none at all.
2. Lead with what candidates care about
Put pay range, schedule, caseload and supervision support near the top. Mention CEU support, mentorship, admin help and paid non-billable time if you offer them. Experienced BCBAs compare offers on these details.
3. Check credentials early
Confirm BACB certification and any state license (for example, an LBA where your state requires one) before the first interview. It saves everyone time and avoids late surprises.
4. Keep the interview process short
Two conversations are usually enough: one with clinical leadership to talk about cases and supervision, and one to cover logistics and the offer. Every extra week between steps is a week another clinic can make an offer.
5. Make a clear, written offer
Spell out base pay, bonus structure, caseload expectations, start date and benefits in writing. Ambiguity at the offer stage is one of the most common reasons strong candidates walk away.
6. Plan the first 90 days
A structured onboarding plan, with credentialing, payer enrollment, case handoffs and a supervision schedule, helps a new BCBA ramp up and stay. Retention starts the day they accept.
